Dr Jenni Douglas

Exercise Physiologist

HELLO LOVELY!

I'm Jenni

A 40 something mum of three with a busy academic job, a business and a passion for health and wellness.

In 2009 I left a full time career and studied for my doctorate with my studies focussing on the physiological demands of equestrian sports. I wanted to use my knowledge of the equestrian industry and sports sciences to provide an online platform that specialises in the athletic preparation of equestrian athletes and that business was born in 2015 which coincided with a transatlantic move from the UK to Canada with my husband, and then, two children.

Over the years I have been fortunate to support hundreds of equestrian athletes and have created engaged communities and dedicated academic research to the equestrian field, my research is very much focussed on equestrian sport as a niche but more broadly with my role as a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology my research focus has shifted to female physiology, wellness and performance.

Fuelled by my own lived experiences and passion for empowering others I have expanded my focus to all women who have gone through a life transition which includes careers, childbirth, peri and menopause who have become a little bit ‘bottom of the pile’.

Through my carefully curated courses and programmes I am dedicated to supporting and empowering women as they navigate the most complex stages of their lives and support them to be the best version of themselves by coaching them to enhance their physical fitness, improve their dietary habits and get clear with lifestyle interventions to improve executive functioning, parenting and enjoying their life.

How it all started...

My business was an idea that came to me because of a big life transition....

In 2015 my husband burst in the room and said to me (whilst I was on the loo!), 'You will never guess what, I've been offered the job in Canada' and 3 months later myself, my husband our dog and our 2 boys were living on Vancouver Island, BC.

I was in the write up stages of my PhD, had to leave my job and start life again in a new place and quite often alone since my husbands new job included a lot of travel.

The boys were not school age so I wanted to find a job that would allow me to work around them and that is how my first business EventFit developed! I used the knowledge from my PhD and curated a specialist platform for the athletic preparation of Equestrian athletes. I have numerous publications, book chapters and public speaking arrangements worldwide on this topic. I have helped 1000's of busy female equestrians look and feel their best.

Empowered...

A decade in the online space and Empower has evolved...

In 2022 I had at 39 a third baby! This was fantastic but, as all life transitions, it through me for a little while. I didn't identify with myself, I didn't feel that I identified with my social groups and I felt lost. I stopped enjoying work and whilst I was exercising regularly it became a little compulsive and my nutrition habits were not serving me.

I was in a funk. I took some time away, I got some leadership coaching and as I started to feel more like myself, more 'Empowered' again this was the moment Empowered was curated. It took some mindset work and some inner reflections but from this I have been able to make big decisions. My big girl pants are firmly back on... some might say, my PowerPants!

My research whilst still having an equestrian niche will focus more on female physiology specifically focussing on areas such as childbirth and peri-menopause and physical activity. My online training will expand from equestrians to all women navigating life transitions such as busy careers, parenting, new baby to the family and per-menopause.

I felt so passionate and so excited when I made this decision I just knew it was the right thing for me to run towards.

Some fun facts about me...

I have been online coaching since 2015 and working as an academic since 2006!

There is 21 years between me and my mum and 22 years between me and my bro!

I have three beautiful children, 2 bigger teen boys, Connor and Euan and Eloise who is almost 2!

My husband Lee is also a sports enthusiast. We have travelled the world with his career as an International Rugby Coach.

I still don't know what my drink of choice is, want to help me find out?
